Our podcast, AMPED (Air Methods Prehospital EDucation) has returned with another episode this month! The podcast, designed for pre-hospital and in-hospital care providers, sheds light on the unique and challenging clinical scenarios faced by our emergency medical crews. It is a first-of-its-kind platform in which air medical and in-hospital clinicians share their stories from the frontlines and learn from one-another’s unique experiences in providing lifesaving care.

In our previous episode, the team dissects why emergency medicine requires our professionals to work from limited information and rely on instincts and assessment to diagnose and treat a patient. We discussed why this usually leads our team down the right path, but sometimes leads them astray and takes them down the wrong clinical pathway for a patient.

In this month’s episode we look at what do you do when you receive a patient who is in critical cardiac condition after being in jail. We ask:

  1. Did they already have a heart disease that is getting worse?
  2. Or was it something they took?
  3. Or was it a prescribed medicine that they couldn’t take?

Regardless, it can be a struggle to find an answer and at this point we better know our basics to keep the patient alive.

The AMPED podcast team is joined by flight nurse Chelsea Fehring, Rebecca Tracy, DO, emergency physician and EMS physician, and Evan Schwarz, MD, emergency physician, toxicologist, addiction medicine to delve into another AMPED case that presents some unique and unexpected challenges.
